Scan week, continued

On March 6, 2020March 6, 2020 By ElaineIn cancer sucks, cancer treatment3 Comments

Wishing he could be playing outside Eli's complaint for the day is that he wants to be outside playing in the spring-like weather instead of cooped up in an MRI machine for the next three hours. We arrived at the hospital earlier than planned, but the staff was ready to get started. I had already …

Scan week

On March 3, 2020March 4, 2020 By ElaineIn cancer sucks, cancer treatment, Fun with doctorsLeave a comment

Waiting to be called back for the PET/CT Looks like it will be a longer than usual PET/CT day. We came an hour early for port access and labs (I would have done the access at home, but he needed labs, so I opted to do it under supervision at the clinic instead). Quick fist …

Almost there

On February 18, 2020February 18, 2020 By ElaineIn cancer sucks, cancer treatment2 Comments

Today is Eli's last in clinic chemo. We continue with daily pills for the next two weeks, then do scans, then we're done. Yay! I will get to use my port accessing superpowers to access his port at home before his MRI. March 9th is the official end of treatment, assuming scans go well.

Making counts, continued…

Eli made counts today and is now receiving the first infusion in his last cycle of chemotherapy. Yay! March 9th will be the official end of treatment appointment. By then, he'll have had the next set of scans. At that point, assuming scans are clear, he will continue to have scans every few months, diminishing …

Making Counts

Every time we go to the clinic, they draw Eli's blood and send it down to the lab. The lab technicians test the levels of the different components of his blood and send back a report. The doctor looks at the report of the blood counts to monitor his health and determine whether his ANC …

Pen Pals

On December 30, 2019December 30, 2019 By ElaineIn cancer sucks, cancer treatment, Fun with doctors

If you recall the notes exchanged between Eli and the Candy King, you may be as entertained by them as I was. Two weeks ago, Eli wrote another message to the "Candy King", his oncologist's boyfriend. Dr. Schneller gave permission to use names, so we will now call her boyfriend by his actual name: David. Two …

Happy Holidays!

On December 9, 2019 By ElaineIn cancer sucks, cancer treatment, Fun with doctorsLeave a comment

Last year, we were still adjusting to the whole cancer thing during Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, I admit, all these holidays bring back memories from last year, starting with Halloween. It seems like I see everything through the lense of pre-cancer and post-cancer diagnosis. The nice thing about this year, is we are back to …

Let it snow

On November 25, 2019November 25, 2019 By ElaineIn cancer sucksLeave a comment

This is the view from the imaging waiting room. Eli will be excited when he sees how much snow has come down while he's been watching movies in the MRI. Yes, it is that time again--periodic scans to make sure the cancer hasn't returned. This time, the correct amount of time was scheduled, so no …

Mom the Boss

On November 11, 2019 By ElaineIn cancer sucks, cancer treatmentLeave a comment

After practicing accessing Eli's port the last few weeks with only mediocre results, I finally got a compliment from Eli on today's access. It didn't hurt him (or me) at all.

Everything changed when October attacked

On November 4, 2019 By ElaineIn cancer sucksLeave a comment

November 2, 2019 October is becoming a difficult month for us. It seems like most of the major challenges we've experienced happen in October. We survived another October. This year, we had Noah's neck lump and a water leak in my sewing room in our basement, source yet to be identified. I managed to get …
