Day 1:

Eli and I flew first class with my sister, courtesy of my sister Jennifer and her husband’s frequent flier miles. I loved the pod seating, with customized reclining and large screens. I have never been so comfortable while flying and even took a nap. Eli enjoyed listening to an audio book and even enjoyed the snack box option he chose (he’s been rather picky about food).

After eating dinner at the hotel, we attempted to take a swim in the pool and soak in the hot tub, but both were too cold.

Day 2:

With the forecast in Cancun looking rainy and the pool and hot tub being cold, we opted to spend the day doing an excursion to La Isla Mujeres. The forecast there was partly sunny. We took a Trimaran tour, including snorkeling, lunch, and shopping. Jennifer and Eli opted not to snorkel, so I swam with the fish without them. Eli got a little beach time.

To celebrate New Year’s Eve, Eli and I played a little Skull King and listened to an audiobook. I fell asleep before midnight. Jennifer stayed awake to keep Eli company, but he ended up falling asleep, too, so we celebrated the next couple nights.

Day 3:

2020 was such a mixed bag of terrible and great things. I am just glad it’s over. We spent the first day moving to the next hotel, Marriott Cancun Resort. It was much better than the Fairfield Inn by the airport and sits on the coast. We hung out in the pool all afternoon–it was just the right temperature.

Day 4:

We decided to walk down the street to Aquaworld to do some water activities. After spending time playing on the Aquabounce, we did their Skyrider and Flowrider. Overall we had fun, but the Flowrider was more difficult than expected.

Day 5:

We had originally planned a tour to Tulum the day before, but it had fallen through, so we had to move it to this day. The weather forecast was rainy, but we learned to deal with the rain in Florida, so this didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves.

Day 6:

We decided to relax and hung out on the beach at the resort. It was a much needed break.

Day 7:

We took a ferry to La Isla Mujeres to swim with the dolphins, feed the manatees, and snorkle with the sharks.

Yes, the dolphins are pushing Eli with their noses

Day 8:

We switched to the JW Marriott and went on an excursion to Chichen Itza with my sisters and nieces. Unfortunately, Eli started to complain about left eye pain and it was bad enough I called and messaged his doctors to figure out what to do. Fortunately, the pain was manageable with OTC meds, and eventually improved. He has been having intermittent eye pain since we returned, so the doctors are continuing to investigate.

Swimming in a cenote after exploring Chichen Itza (thanks Jennifer for the Tylenol that helped Eli’s eye feel better)

Day 9:

We spent most of the day at the pool. Eli swam while the rest of us tried to relax.

Infinity edge pool with an ocean view–the water was fabulous
Bacon wrapped hot dog, who knew?
Tepan yaki at the hotel’s Japan’s restaurant–I didn’t go to Mexico to eat Japanese food, but Eli really enjoyed the food. He was feeling cold, so I wrapped him with napkins.

Day 10:

I went souvenir shopping with my sisters and brought back a few things for Eli’s siblings. We learned where we ought to have gone first, before negotiating prices with the other vendors.

Lime sodas are the best
A little more pool time after shopping

Day 11:

We flew home in the afternoon, but not before we got a little more beach time.

I didn’t want to deal with packing a wet swimsuit, so I just lounged in a chair and ordered my first kiwi lime soda.
My sister Mayreen worked on digging a ditch with Eli (thanks Mayreen and Becca for the discounted hotel rooms!)

I just wanted to thank Jennifer and Ryan for the plane tickets, Mayreen, Becca, and Alex for the discounted hotel reservations, and all our friends and family and mysterious checks who have given us money which made this trip possible. ❤❤❤
